About Resize Image

Resize Image changes an image's pixel dimensions โ€” its actual width and height in pixels, not its display size in a document. Reach for it before uploading a photo to a site with dimension limits, preparing a batch of product images to a consistent size, or shrinking a large camera photo (often 4000+ pixels wide) down to something reasonable for the web, like 1200px.

Resizing happens by drawing the source image onto an HTML5 canvas at the new dimensions, using the browser's built-in image scaling, then exporting the canvas contents with canvas.toBlob(). The lock-aspect-ratio option keeps width and height changes proportional so the image isn't stretched: typing a new width automatically recalculates the matching height, and vice versa, based on the original ratio.

Shrinking an image is effectively lossless beyond normal downsampling, and it's the more common use case since most photos start larger than needed. Enlarging is different โ€” the browser can only interpolate between existing pixels, not invent real detail, so an image scaled well past its original size will look soft or blurry. For a large upscale, a dedicated AI upscaler will do noticeably better than pixel interpolation.

Frequently asked questions

Will resizing distort my image?

Not if "Lock aspect ratio" stays checked โ€” width and height scale together so proportions stay correct.

Can I make an image larger?

Yes, though enlarging beyond the original size can make it look soft, since no new detail is added.

What's the difference between resizing and cropping?

Resizing scales the whole image to new dimensions while keeping everything in frame; cropping cuts away part of the image instead. This tool only resizes โ€” nothing is cut from the picture.

What resampling method is used when shrinking an image?

It relies on the browser's native canvas image smoothing, which uses bilinear/bicubic interpolation โ€” the same general technique most everyday photo tools use, and it gives good results for typical downsizing.

Can I resize by percentage instead of exact pixels?

Yes โ€” the 25/50/75/100% preset buttons scale the image directly from its original dimensions, so you don't need to calculate exact pixel values yourself.
