About Fill PDF Form

This fills in real interactive form fields on a PDF โ€” text boxes, checkboxes, dropdowns, and radio buttons โ€” the kind built into tax forms, job applications, intake forms, and many government documents. Rather than needing to print, hand-write, and scan a form, you fill it in on-screen and download a completed PDF with your answers already in place, ready to submit or save.

The tool uses pdf-lib.js to open the PDF's AcroForm โ€” the standard PDF mechanism for interactive fields โ€” and reads every field it finds along with its type, using getForm() and getFields(). It builds a matching input for each one: a text input for text fields, a checkbox for checkboxes, a dropdown for choice fields, and so on. When you submit, it sets each field's value through pdf-lib's form API and re-saves the file, without flattening the fields.

Because it reads real AcroForm data rather than analyzing the page visually, it only works on PDFs that actually have interactive fields โ€” most fillable government and business forms qualify, but a form built with Adobe's older XFA/LiveCycle technology won't be read correctly, since that's a different, more complex format that standard PDF tools like pdf-lib don't parse. It also doesn't run any validation scripts the original form's designer may have embedded.

Frequently asked questions

What kinds of forms work?

Any PDF with real interactive form fields โ€” text boxes, checkboxes, dropdowns, and radio buttons. Scanned paper forms without real fields won't show any fillable fields; use Edit PDF to add text on top of those instead.

Does this flatten the form?

No โ€” the filled values stay as editable form fields in the output PDF, so it can still be opened and adjusted later in any PDF reader.

Does this work with dynamic XFA forms (Adobe LiveCycle forms)?

No โ€” this reads standard AcroForm fields. Older dynamic XFA forms use a different, more complex format that isn't supported here; those typically need to be filled in Adobe Acrobat instead.

Does it check that I've filled in required fields correctly?

No โ€” it sets the values you enter without running any validation logic or scripts the original form may have included, so double-check required fields yourself before submitting.

Is my progress saved if I close the tab partway through?

No โ€” everything happens in your browser for that session only, with nothing saved automatically. Download your filled copy before closing the tab or navigating away.
